Pagio (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is an AI-powered reading platform designed to make reading fun and engaging for children through interactive content, educational games, and social features. Protecting children's privacy is our top priority. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard information across the United States, Europe, India, China, and other regions where we operate.

Children under the legal age of consent for data processing (13 in the U.S., 16 in the EU, 18 in India, 14 in China) may only use Pagio with verified parental or guardian consent.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the minimum information needed to provide our services.

Information from parents/guardians

• Email address (for account setup and parental consent)

Information from children (with parental consent)

• Display name (username only, not real name)
• Age and region (for age-appropriate content and regional compliance)
• Book selections, quiz results, reading streaks, points, and gems earned
• Chat conversations with AI assistants
• User-created content (comics, stories)
• Friend connections (limited to viewing reading activity only, no direct messaging)
• Daily article completion and vocabulary game performance

Automatically collected information

• Device type, operating system, app version
• General app usage (e.g., time spent on activities, features used)
• Performance data for improving AI recommendations

Information we do not collect

• No photos, videos, or recordings beyond voice chat sessions (which are processed in real-time and not stored)
• No precise location data
• No child's real name, address, or phone number
• No full book texts (we create transformative educational content only)

2. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Personalize AI-generated content and book recommendations
• Track reading progress and award points, gems, and achievements
• Generate daily educational articles appropriate for the child's age and skill level
• Enable AI chat conversations about books and educational topics
• Show friends' reading activity and achievements (no communication features)
• Process user-created comics and stories for community sharing
• Manage the gem-based store system for educational rewards
• Improve app performance, safety, and educational effectiveness
• Communicate with parents/guardians about accounts or policies

We do not use children's information for targeted advertising.

3. Information Sharing

We do not sell or rent personal information. We only share data in these limited situations:

• With trusted service providers who help us operate the app (hosting, AI services, analytics, database), under strict confidentiality agreements
• When required by law or to protect the safety of users
• With explicit parental consent for specific optional features

AI Service Providers

We use AI services (OpenAI, Anthropic) to provide educational content and chat features. These services process data according to their own privacy policies and our data processing agreements.

4. Use in Schools and Pilots

When Pagio is used in schools as part of a free pilot program:

• We may work with teachers and administrators to provide access to students
• We do not require or collect any educational records, grades, or sensitive personal information
• During pilots in the U.S., schools may provide consent on behalf of parents/guardians for educational use only, in compliance with COPPA
• Parents may contact us at any time to review or delete their child's information
• Outside the U.S. (Europe, India, China), parental/guardian consent is required even during pilots

5. Parental Rights

Parents and guardians have the right to:

• Review the information we hold about their child
• Request deletion of their child's data/account
• Withdraw consent at any time
• Access their child's AI chat history and user-created content
• Control social features and friend connections

6. Data Retention

We keep data only as long as needed for educational use. Specific retention periods:

• Chat conversations: Retained to maintain conversation context and improve AI responses
• User-created content (comics, stories): Retained for community features unless deletion requested
• Quiz results and progress: Retained for educational tracking and recommendations
• Account data: Retained until account deletion requested

If a parent requests deletion, we remove all associated data within 30 days.

7. Security

We use encryption, secure servers, and restricted employee access to protect user data. While no system is completely secure, we take all reasonable steps to safeguard information, including:

• End-to-end encryption for sensitive data
• Regular security audits and updates
• Access controls and authentication systems
• Secure data transmission protocols

8. Region-Specific Notices

United States (COPPA & FERPA): We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Parents must provide verifiable consent. During school pilots, schools may provide consent for educational use only. We do not access or store student educational records under FERPA.

European Union (GDPR-K): Children under 16 require parental consent. We follow GDPR requirements including rights of access, correction, and erasure. We process data lawfully based on parental consent and legitimate educational interests.

India (DPDP Act, 2023): Children under 18 are considered minors and require parental consent. We implement enhanced protections for processing children's data.

China (PIPL): For children under 14, guardian consent is required and enhanced protections are applied, including additional security measures and data minimization practices.

9. International Transfers

Information may be stored on servers located in the United States. By using Pagio, you consent to the transfer of data outside your home country, subject to applicable legal protections and appropriate safeguards.

10. Educational and Fair Use

Pagio creates transformative educational content and does not display original book texts. Our AI-generated quizzes and interactive content are designed to enhance literacy and encourage reading of full books. This usage falls under fair use provisions for educational purposes.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect product improvements or legal requirements. Parents/guardians will be notified of significant changes by email at least 30 days before they take effect.
